🌟 What Is a Foundation Programme?

A Foundation programme is a pre-university qualification designed to prepare students for a bachelor's degree. It usually focuses on subjects related to the intended degree and develops academic and study skills. Many programmes take around one year, but duration and progression rules vary by institution. Completing a Foundation does not guarantee entry to every degree: students must meet the selected university's academic, subject and English requirements.

🎯 International Student Admission Requirements

📄

1. Academic Qualifications

✓ Completed secondary education or an accepted equivalent. ✓ O-Level, IGCSE or another recognised qualification may be accepted. ✓ Minimum grades and subject credits depend on the programme. ✓ Science pathways may require Mathematics and Science subjects. ✓ The institution assesses qualification equivalency.

There is no single grade requirement for every Foundation course. Check the selected institution's official criteria.

🛂

2. International Student Documents

✓ Valid passport and required passport-page copies. ✓ Academic certificates and transcripts. ✓ English proficiency evidence accepted for the application. ✓ Completed application form. ✓ Passport-size photograph in the required format. ✓ Health Declaration Form and additional documents where requested.

Certification and translation requirements depend on the institution and application process.

📊

3. Grades & Subject Prerequisites

✓ Check minimum overall academic results. ✓ Check Mathematics requirements for technical pathways. ✓ Check Biology, Chemistry or Physics for relevant science pathways. ✓ Ask whether predicted results or provisional certificates are accepted. ✓ Confirm any interview, portfolio or additional assessment.
🗓️

4. Intake, Fees & Duration

✓ Confirm the next available intake. ✓ Check application and registration deadlines. ✓ Request the full tuition fee and additional charges. ✓ Check accommodation, insurance and living costs separately. ✓ Confirm programme duration and progression rules.

🗣️ English Proficiency: With or Without IELTS

✅

Option A — If You Have an Accepted English Certificate

International students must meet the Foundation programme's English requirements and provide evidence accepted for the applicable EMGS Student Pass process.

• IELTS Academic or another accepted IELTS format. • TOEFL — subject to accepted test type and score. • PTE Academic, where accepted. • MUET, where accepted. • Accepted Cambridge English qualifications. • Other evidence on the current EMGS and university accepted lists.
Score requirements: There is no single English score for all Foundation programmes. Confirm the minimum score, accepted test format and certificate validity with the university and EMGS.
📘

Option B — If You Do Not Have IELTS

IELTS is not the only possible test, but international students must still satisfy the applicable university and Student Pass English requirements.

1. Ask whether TOEFL, PTE Academic, MUET or another currently accepted test can be used. 2. Check whether the institution offers an English preparation course. 3. Ask whether conditional admission is available and what conditions must be met. 4. Confirm whether previous English-medium study qualifies for an accepted exemption. 5. Obtain written confirmation of the English evidence required for the EMGS VAL application.
Important: An English preparation course, conditional offer or university exemption does not automatically replace English evidence required for the EMGS Visa Approval Letter (VAL) process. Missing required evidence may delay processing and affect eligibility for a Student Pass covering the full course duration. Confirm your route before paying fees or booking travel.
🛂

EMGS Student Pass Requirements

New international Foundation students generally follow the institution's EMGS Student Pass process. The exact requirements may depend on nationality and the application route.

✓ Passport photo meeting current EMGS specifications. ✓ Passport biodata page and required visa or observation pages. ✓ Passport validity of at least 18 months for a new application. ✓ Official university offer letter. ✓ Completed Health Declaration Form. ✓ Academic certificates and transcripts. ✓ English proficiency evidence accepted for the VAL application. ✓ Personal Bond and other documents where applicable.
